Geochemical signatures of the Taku schist, Peninsular Malaysia: implications for sedimentary protoliths and tectonic setting

Abstract: The Taku Schist, located in the north-east of Peninsular Malaysia, represents a significant Indosinian orogenic feature resulting from the collision between the Sukhothai Arcs and Sibumasu. This study aims to unravel the tectonic and metamorphic evolution of the Taku Schist through detailed geochemical analyses. Utilizing X-ray fluorescence and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, we identified the metasedimentary rocks of the Taku Schist as predominantly greywacke and shale. These rocks are classified within a quartzose sedimentary provenance, indicative of a Continental Island Arc (CIA) setting. The geochemical composition reflected the episodic compressions experienced by the Taku Schist, leading to the transformation of the Sibumasu sedimentary cover and the Bentong-Raub mélange into various greenschist facies. Additionally, this study identified amphibolite facies, with their formation conditions and depths being closely linked to their relative positions within the upper plate of the Sukhothai Arc. These findings provide new insights into the complex tectonic history and metamorphic processes affecting the Taku Schist.
