Comparison Of Cardio-Metabolic Ageing Markers Among Individuals With And Without Vitamin D Deficiency

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: Ageing is a progressive or sequential change in an organism that raises the likelihood of illness debility, and mortality. Low vitamin D levels have been associated with increased body fat and cardiovascular diseases. Limited evidence is available about low vitamin D levels and cardio-metabolic ageing. Objective: To compare the cardio-metabolic biomarkers of ageing with and without vitamin D deficient subjects in middle-aged population. Methods: This observational study involved 174 participants aged 45 to 65 years. Serum levels of vitamin D, heart rate variability, resting heart rate and blood pressure were measured as cardiovascular biomarkers of ageing and glycosylated haemoglobin, lipid profile and anthropometric measures like waist-hip circumferences, body fat percent were included as metabolic ageing markers. To compare the cardiometabolic biomarkers of ageing between the groups the Mann-Whitney U test was performed. Results: Metabolic ageing markers, such as total cholesterol, waist-to-hip ratio, and low-density lipoprotein, were significantly elevated in vitamin D deficient group. Additionally, heart rate variability indices showed that individuals with lower vitamin D levels had markedly reduced cardiac autonomic modulation. Conclusion: The Study findings indicate that deficiency of serum vitamin D has significant effect on the progression of cardiometabolic ageing.
