Por uma própria independência: assentos e moradas do Ipiranga aos Jafet

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This article aims to understand the representational relationship between the Jafet family and the Ipiranga district. It begins by examining how the Jafet family, Levantine immigrants, engaged with the memory of Ipiranga and the celebrations of the First Centenary of Independence as a means of social integration, representation of dignity, and overcoming mistrust. The family strategically aligned themselves with local political elites through national symbols, emphasizing their presence as industrialists in the neighborhood. The representation was driven by ideals of material progress and work ethic, symbolizing the partners of Nami Jafet & Irmãos. The study explores the continuous reinvention of identities by the Jafet family, seeking recognition through their contributions to Ipiranga, marked by a distinct "before and after" in their own symbols. Finally, the construction process of the Jafet Palacetes in the neighborhood is analyzed, highlighting the coherent and unified relationship between the Monument-Building and the Factory. The historical context and political rearrangements that shaped the public identities of the Jafet family in Brazil are also discussed.
