Abstract: The development of marine fouling release coatings endowed with antibacterial properties presents significant economic and technical challenges. In this study, branched benzoxazines monomers (THB-BOZs) were synthesized, derived from multifunctional phenol sources with bio-based L-Tyrosine and different functional amine sources. The molecular structure and the curing behavior of these monomers were studied. THB-BOZs monomers exhibited notable antibacterial activity, mainly related to the protonated amino group within their structure, which destroyed the integrity of the bacteria. After the ring-opening polymerization of the monomers, the effects of amine sources functionalities on the properties of THB-PBOZs were evaluated, including gel content, thermal stability, mechanical properties, surface morphology, wettability, and adhesion properties. Particularly, the A3+B2 type polybenzoxazine with 1,12-Dodecanediamine as amine source (THB-PBOZs-DDA) demonstrated a high gel content of 86±2.71% with a dense cross-linking density, a high thermal degradation temperature of 461±1.63 °C, a tensile stress of 3.3±0.54 MPa, and an elastic modulus of 32.11±0.42 MPa. The THB-PBOZs-DDA coating processed a smooth surface with 6.09 nm of Ra, appropriate wettability with WCA of 133±1.09°, and stable adhesion properties to substrate with a strength of 5.43±0.11 MPa. THB-PBOZs coatings displayed exceptional outstanding antibacterial and antifouling characteristics, attributable to their inherent antibacterial nature, low surface energy and low modulus. Besides, compared with the reported antifouling coatings, THB-PBOZs-DDA showed the best comprehensive performance, suggesting broader application prospects. The fouling-release polybenzoxazines, with the inherent antibacterial property, offer an innovative strategy for the advancement of marine antifouling coatings and a sustainable solution to the persistent issue of marine biofouling.
