The causes and conditions of electoral crimes

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In any democratic society, the electoral process is the essential foundation of legitimate governance and civic participation. However, this process is often vulnerable to various threats and distortions that can undermine the integrity and fairness of elections. Electoral crimes, which range from political corruption and fraud to intimidation and manipulation, are a major concern for any democratic system. The causes and conditions leading to the emergence of electoral crimes are complex and often interconnected. These may include structural factors such as a lack of transparency and control in the electoral process, weaknesses in regulations and law enforcement, as well as cultural and socio-economic factors such as high levels of corruption or heightened political polarization.
