Froth Segmentation Based on Convex Polygon for Froth Flotation Monitoring

Abstract: Froth flotation, a type of mineral processing, is a process of selectively separating useful minerals through skimming the froth in a flotation cell. In this process, the physical features of froth such as size, color, and mobility provide information that helps to understand the process of froth flotation. In particular, in the case of size, it is possible to predict not only the recovery of useful minerals but also the progress of processing. In this paper, we propose a froth segmentation method that divides each froth through region growing as a unit of convex polygon in order to measure the size of froth.BR/Experimental results shows that the proposed method not only maintains the shape of the bubble well, but also makes it possible to obtain robust segmentation results even in a noisy environment including cracks on froth surface.
