A Novel 10 MW Floating Wind Turbine Platform—SparFloat: Conceptual Design and Dynamic Response Analysis

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: New conceptual design of Floating Offshore Wind Platform (FOWP) is crucial for deep-sea wind power generation to increase power output, lower construction costs, and minimize damage risks. While there have been various conceptual designs, tailored solutions for the South China Sea are limited due to the relatively harsh environment. This study, combining the advantages of semi-submersible and spar platforms, proposes a novel 10 MW FOWP - "SparFloat" that is suitable for the sea conditions of the South China Sea. Through systematically adjusting the platform column distance, column diameter, and heave plate diameter, the impact of changes in platform geometries on the dynamic response of the platform is investigated. The results highlight that platform stiffness significantly affects performance, while added mass has a minor impact. Furthermore, the SparFloat platform is improved based on the hydrodynamic results. Finally, time-domain simulations of the optimized model involving interactions of aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, and mooring are conducted using a coupling framework based on FAST and AQWA (F2A). The outcomes confirm that platform motion and mooring forces adhere to rules, affirming the robustness and reliability of the design.
