Anion Effect on the Adsorption of 1-(Hydroxyethyl)-3-Methylimidazolium Chloride, Sulfate and Dihydrogenophosphate Ionic Liquids onto NA-Exchanged Montmorillonite: Structural, Thermal and Dielectric Analysis

Type: article
Abstract: Our research described in this paper investigated ionic liquids (ILs) adsorption of various anions into Na-montmorillonite (Mt-Na) natural clay and the clay that had been modified chemically for environmental purposes. The ensuing nanocomposites were subjected to structural, thermal and dielectric analysis for further characterization, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) methods. Both Mt-Na and the ILs exhibited distinctive IR vibrational bands. TGA confirmed the immobilization of organic cations in the matrix, creating a thermally stable nanocomposite that could withstand 360 °C. In addition, the type of anion significantly affected the Mt’s IL content. Furthermore, our dielectric and conductivity investigations showed that the nanocomposite’s dielectric properties and alternating current (AC) conductivity were affected by the anion and IL content incorporated into the Mt clay. Additionally, it was found that these properties followed the same anion sequence as the loading of ILs into Mt: Cl > HSO4 > H2PO4.
