THE DEVELOPMENT OF STATE-CONCILIAR IDEAS IN UKRAINIAN POLITICAL THOUGHT OF THE 20s AND 30s 20TH CENTURY

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The article investigates the evolution of the sobornіst (state and national conciliarism) concept within the political thought of Ukraine during the 1920s and 1930s, examining its fundamental characteristics and features in relation to the historical and socio-cultural development of the time. It analyzes the state-building concepts formulated across various ideological currents. Ukrainian political thought in this period was shaped by the socio-psychological and geopolitical aftermath of the defeat in the liberation struggles of 1917–1921. Notably, this era was marked by the emergence of mutually exclusive trends, differing significantly in their methodological approaches and evaluative criteria for historical processes, as well as in their pursuit of alternative state-building models. A crucial element of this discourse was the active involvement of participants in the Ukrainian revolution, who engaged in analyzing the causes of their defeats and errors in state-building, seeking to determine viable paths for future development. The study further explores the genre diversity of discourse surrounding state-building, ranging from newspaper articles to scholarly monographs, underscoring the intensity of intellectual debate and polemics within political and academic circles. The formation of state-building concepts was deeply influenced by the subjectivity and biases of the authors, as well as by the dominance of external factors and political circumstances, which often overshadowed ideological principles. Concurrently, there was a progressive radicalization of political thought, reflecting the intensification of social and political contradictions. Despite the varying interpretations and assessments of the Ukrainian state-building process, the majority of political figures and scholars of the time identified the establishment of a unified Ukrainian state as the primary goal of the national movement, positioning it as a central tenet of their worldview and political agenda. Keywords: conciliarism, political thought, Ukrainian statehood, idea, concept, politics, controversy, criteria, interwar period.
