Periodontal disease and the systemic complications: multi-professional integration and the impact on Unified Health System (SUS)

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Oral health plays a fundamental role in the general well-being of individuals. Periodontal disease, a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, is closely related to systemic complications such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature birth, and others. In this article, we explore the relationship between periodontal disease, multidisciplinary integration, and the impact on the Unified Health System. Prevention, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of periodontal disease are essential in promoting overall health. Multidisciplinary integration, involving dentists, doctors, nurses, and other health professionals, is essential to manage this condition and minimize the systemic consequences. Examples of successful programs highlight how this multidisciplinary approach can improve oral health and reduce costs associated with systemic complications resulting from periodontal disorder. In this analysis, a sample of selected studies was reviewed that discussed the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic difficulties. We conclude that raising awareness about periodontal disease and its systemic implications is essential. Multidisciplinary integration and continuous research are necessary to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, benefiting the systemic health of individuals and the effectiveness of health care in general.
