Female Subjectivity and Patriotic Child-rearing in the Pedagogical Reflections of Barbara Żulińska

Abstract: The Resurrectionist Barbara Żulińska (1881-1962) can be counted among the representatives of polish Catholic pedagogy. The views of B. Żulinska are situated in the Catholic current of cultural pedagogy, with the pre-school child at their centre. She is a practitioner and a supporter of conservative-oriented upbringing emphasising moral, religious and national values. She also attributes great pedagogical significance to femininity. We find this in her books – Obowiązki Polki. Pogadanki dla dziewcząt [Duties of a Polish Woman. Talks for girls], Matka-obywatelka. Pogadanki o wychowaniu dzieci [The Mother-Citizen. Talks on raising children], as well as in her chapters in Podręcznik dla ochroniarek [Handbook for female guardians] and her many other writings. The aim of the article is to reconstruct and analyse the model of femininity proposed by B. Żulinska in her pedagogical oeuvre and to revise its role in her concept of patriotic child rearing.
