Abstract: The sterile scent of disinfectant, the rhythmic beeping of monitors, and the ever-present hum of fluorescent lights – these were the constants of my reality for a significant portion of my childhood. Sickle cell disease, a relentless adversary, dictated much of my early life by confining me to hospital beds for extended periods. It was during one such confinement, in early adulthood, that a pivotal experience fueled a passion for medicine.
