A retrospective study (2009-2019) on bovine brucellosis trends in western Algeria

Year: 2024

Abstract: Bovine brucellosis is an important disease affecting cattle characterised by abortion, still birth, reduced milk production, weak foetus and infertility in both males and females. Brucellosis is a prevalent zoonosis globally, presenting a substantial risk to human health. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has recommended strategies or measures to control or eradicate brucellosis, only some developed countries have achieved freedom from animal brucellosis. The present study aimed to analyze the trends and epidemiological characteristics of bovine brucellosis in relizane (western Algeria). To collect data on bovine brucellosis for the ten years (2009 to 2019) in the region studied, we contacted the veterinary inspection of the wilaya of Relizane, which provided us with the following reports and data. The information obtained from the data includes date of sampling, number of animals tested and the number of animals within the tested herd and screening date. A total of 7030 herds and 82434 cattle were sampled within the period of study (2009 – 2019), of which 343 (4.83%; 95% CI, 4.38 – 5.38) herds and 928 (1.13%; 95% CI; 1.06 – 1.20) cattle tested positive. The annual mean brucellosis seroprevalence level among cattle for the period of study was 1.02 %, with 2015 having the highest rate (2.28 % CI, 1.73– 2.83) and 2010 having the lowest (0.26 % CI, 0.14 – 0.38). A significant decreasing trend of seroprevalence from 2009 to 2012, increasing trend from 2012 to 2016 and decreasing trend was from 2016 to 2019 observed. The annual mean herd level seroprevalence for the study period was 4.49 % with the highest in 2016 (7.97% CI, 6.28 – 9.66) and the lowest in 2.12 (1.88% CI, 0.87 – 2.89).The chi-square statistics showed to be associated with increased seropositivity (P<0.05). In conclusion, Bovine brucellosis is widespread among herds in region Relizane at a low within-herd seroprevalence rate.
