Abstract: Q.I just won a close election.Thank you, Management Report. Can the union ever come back and try again? How much time do I have before being worried?A. Congratulations on the union win.It can be very gratifying, and certainly a relief, to know that a majority of your employees continue to believe in the company. In answer to your first question, a union can come back and try again but must wait 12 months until they can file a new petition.Your second question is, in many ways, even more important. The time to be worried is now.Take a day or two to share in the excitement of the win, then get to work.A close election means that your workforce was vulnerable, and a union election win does not change that.Unions can-and do-return for a second shot. There are instances where a union has lost the initial election, only to come back and win a year later in a new election. The time is now to try to remedy as many of the factors that may have led to union interest in the first place.Twelve months will go by quickly and waiting too long to improve your union prevention strategy may very well be too late.■
