The role of the back-arc basin in forming slab heterogeneity and generating volcanism in the Kuril-Kamchata Island arc

Abstract: Origin of volcanism along the Kuril-Kamchatka island arc (KKIA) was analyzed. Geophysical observations show variations in slabʼs properties. Different widths of the volcanic belt in the north and south of the KKIA are caused by changes in the slab's angle. The Bussol Strait rift system may be generated by significant changes in the slab's velocity. We proposed that the back-arc basin plays a dominant role in formation various slabʼs parameters and volcanism manifestations along the KKIA.
