Build it and they will come? - A case study of a ‘softer landings’ approach in creating a low-carbon community

Abstract: This paper reports on an investigation into a low-carbon community supported by a private Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) in Lincolnshire area, highlights the developer’s extended aftercare and on-site support for a low-carbon residential development (termed ‘softer landings' approach) that focuses on engaging residents in behaviour change and low-carbon community building. The findings demonstrate that such approach could support the residents in post occupancy stage and create a positive, self-sufficient loop that feeds forward to aid the developer’s business growth and create a demand-driven market, whilst calling for more research into effective support mechanisms to upscale the ‘softer landings’ approach.
