Hepatoprotective Activity of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Ocimum gratissimum on Clopidogrel and Atorvastatin Induced Hepatic Damage in Rats

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The hepatoprotective activity of hydroalcoholic leaf extract of Ocimum gratissimum was evaluated against liver damage induced by atorvastatin and clopidogrel in rats. Atorvastatin and clopidogrel were administered intraperitoneally at doses of 80 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg, respectively, for 14 days, while the leaf extract was given orally at doses of 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg over the same period. Biochemical markers, including serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and total protein, were assessed to determine the extract's impact on drug-induced liver damage. Animals treated with the hydroalcoholic extract exhibited a significant reduction in serum marker levels, suggesting improved hepatocyte function. Conversely, elevated marker levels were observed in the atorvastatin and clopidogrel group, indicating severe hepatic damage. Silymarin (100 mg/kg) was used as a standard reference drug. The findings demonstrate that the hydroalcoholic leaf extract of Ocimum gratissimum offers significant hepatoprotection against atorvastatin and clopidogrel-induced liver damage.
