Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The present paper makes an attempt to delineate the concept of performativity in gender analysis, primarily introduced by philosopher Judith Butler. However, the fundamental assumptions that performativity makes about the essence of femininity as a social category have had a significant impact on both language and gender and research and philosophy.Judith Butler's book Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990) was published during a crucial time in the history of sociolinguistics. It occurred at the time of a renewed growth of the creative links between sociolinguistics and anthropology. As a result, this created an environment where researchers and theorists were actively investigating social categories as they emerged and had multiple aspects.Identities were examined as being dependent on social and historical factors. It is through the use of the theory of performativity to disseminate Angela Carter's novel Love.Judith Butler's views derived from feminist philosophy, which assert that gender is performative, aligned effectively with the ongoing trend among linguists to explore the connection between linguistic and social conventions like gender. Thus, the paper explores the concept of performativity provides a potential framework for conceptualizing gender, including novel approaches to expressing the connection between linguistics and gender.
