Abstract: History teaching and national identity: a European crisisThe article examines the reappearance of the theme of national identity in the context of discussions on the teaching of history, which responds to a set of purposes that is difficult to identify clearly. With the end of the «Short Twentieth Century», the past had seemed less controversial, but it was only an appearance. From a European perspective, two legitimising principles have been expressed over the last three decades: the drive towards a civic, emancipatory use of history, supported by transnational institutions, an identity-based use, instrumentalised by national politics. The impact of both thrusts has led many to fear an identity crisis of the discipline itself at the epistemological level. The article sets out to historicise the emergence of the different instances at a time when the querelle on the identity value of school history is resurfacing in the Italian context.
