Performance optimization of a space telescope honeycomb core lightweight mirror with local reinforcements based on the mounting configuration

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This paper presents a study on the optimization of a honeycomb core lightweight mirror for space telescopes, aimed at enhancing structural performance under axial gravity. A baseline mirror was designed and analyzed using Finite Element Method (FEM) to assess performance metrics, revealing that the mirror’s stability under axial gravity was weaker than under lateral gravity. To address this, three optimization strategies with local reinforcements were applied: (1) filling core cells in vulnerable regions, (2) implementing a graded honeycomb core with smaller cells in weaker areas, and (3) dividing cells into smaller triangular units under high-stress zones. Each design was evaluated for performance improvement, with the divided cell design showing the highest gains, achieving a 22.07% reduction in peak-to-valley (PV) and a 19.07% reduction in root mean square (RMS) surface errors under axial gravity. These optimized designs remain compatible with common manufacturing techniques, providing effective enhancements without adding technological complexity.
