Neuropsychiatric impact of antibiotic administration on social behavior in zebrafish: Investigating the antioxidant role of alpha lipoic acid

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Behavioral studies on zebrafish (Danio rerio) provide valuable insights into the effects of various compounds on aquatic organisms. This study examines the impact of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), ampicillin (AMP), and their combination (AMP+ALA) on zebrafish behavior during a 96-hour exposure period. Behavioral responses were evaluated using the social interaction test, which measured sociability, and the swimming performance test, assessing locomotor activity and endurance. The experimental design included a control group and three treatment groups: ampicillin, alpha-lipoic acid, and a combination of both. Ampicillin exposure resulted in reduced social interaction and swimming performance, while alpha-lipoic acid showed a protective effect, improving these parameters. The combination treatment produced variable results, suggesting potential interactions between the compounds. These findings highlight the behavioral effects of these substances and their significance for understanding compound interactions in aquatic models.
