Psychological Factors Influencing Motorcycle Helmet Use in Developing Countries like India

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study aims to identify factors influencing motorcycle helmet usage in Jodhpur, India, utilizing digital data collection methods to gather 1340 responses. Binary logit and probit models were employed for analysis. Results indicate that socio-economic variables and psychological factors, including personality, experience, and legislation, do not significantly impact helmet-wearing decisions. However, individuals with a history of severe accidents are more likely to adopt helmets, suggesting a positive influence. Negligence towards safety, comfort issues, risk-taking attitudes, and inconvenience hinders helmet usage. Conversely, respondents prioritizing safety and those prompted by conscious reminders are more inclined to wear helmets. These findings contribute insights into motorcycle riders' behaviour, offering valuable information for policymakers and transportation planners to formulate effective interventions promoting helmet usage. By understanding these dynamics, strategies can be developed to enhance road safety and reduce the risks associated with non-compliance in helmet-wearing practices
