Rethinking Growth and Defense: miR472 as a Sensor and Regulator of Plant Immunity

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of microRNAs (miRNAs) and their pivotal role in gene regulation. This breakthrough has reshaped our understanding of biological processes, including plant immunity (Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet 2024; Weiberg et al. 2014).Pathogens pose significant threats to plant survival, and plants rely on a sophisticated immune system to combat them. The plant immune system has two layers: pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP)-triggered immunity (PTI), mediated by surface pattern recognition receptors, and effector-triggered immunity (ETI), driven by intracellular nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) proteins (Chai et al. 2023;DeFalco and Zipfel 2021;Dodds 2023;Jones et al. 2016;Zhang et al. 2024).PTI and ETI are highly interconnected, sharing signaling pathways and key hormones like salicylic acid and jasmonic acid (Lu and Tsuda 2021).
