Abstract: Cough ensures cleansing of the upper respiratory tract from foreign particles, mucus, and microorganisms, so a health care professional specializing in any field needs to know the physiology of this unconditional reflex for a better understanding of its nature. 43 publications are presented in the review. It analyzes types, frequency, prevalence of chronic cough, afferent and efferent links of the cough reflex, central regulation, and involvement of inflammatory mediators.
