Performance of Silicon Carbide (SiC) ceramic based total hip arthroplasty, numerical resolution of tensile stresses

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study proposes a novel Ti/SiC metal matrix composite as a potential replacement for traditional metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty. The primary objective is to address the significant issue of wear, metal debris, and degradation associated with metal-on-metal friction couples. To optimize the composite's mechanical properties, a micromechanical modeling approach was employed. Representative volume elements (RVEs) with various configurations (square, diamond, four fibers, and random) were analyzed to identify the most stress-resistant model. Subsequent finite element analysis was conducted to investigate the influence of different SiC volume fractions (40%, 50%, and 60%) on the stress distribution within the composite. The results indicate that the four-fiber model with a 40% SiC volume fraction exhibits the lowest von Mises stress (8.60 MPa). This finding suggests that this configuration offers the best compromise between mechanical strength and potential for improved biocompatibility, making it a promising candidate for biomechanical joint prosthesis applications.
