Spatial-temporal evolution of Dengue in the Mid-western region of Brazil

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Dengue is considered the most prevalent arbovirus worldwide, and it occurs in over 100 tropical and subtropical countries. It is one of the most relevant public health issues in Brazil. Its geodemographic expansion among Brazilian states concerns sanitary authorities and healthcare professionals. The study analyzes the temporal progression (2012-2021) of Dengue in the Mid-western region, one of the most affected in the country. Data were collected from Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN - Notifiable Diseases Information System) and from Morbidade Hospitalar (Hospital Morbidity) of SUS (Unified Health System) (SIH/SUS), both via TABNET/DATASUS. Over this period, 1,240,339 cases of Dengue were observed in the Mid-western region, with predominance of female gender (55.0%), age group of 20 to 39 years old (40.0%), and brown ethnicity (34.7%). In 2013, the Mid-western region and the state of Mato Grosso do Sul had the highest Dengue incidence rates. The state of Goiás had the highest number of hospitalizations (57.9%) and deaths (656). The time impact analysis (TIA) for the Mid-western region and its states remained steady for disease progression in the period studied. Even so, the control, prevention, and monitoring of this disease is challenging. Identifying which conditions lead to infection by Dengue is critical, as is establishing effective strategies to prevent its expansion.
