Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the motifs and structure of certain songs known as «mañanas» or «mañanitas», which extend beyond the festive context of birthday celebrations. The research explores the theme of dawn, its motifs, its connection to these songs, and how this theme is linked to religious variants of «Las mañanitas». It investigates motifs such as the arrival of the sun, greetings, the window, singing, and natural elements like the moon and birds. The corpus consists of 29 textual units titled «Las mañanitas», encompassing various communicative intentions. These songs, deeply rooted in ancient tradition, feature characteristic motifs and symbols found in other traditional and popular Mexican compositions. The aim is to examine the variations, traditional uses, and persistence of these motifs and themes.
