The Madwoman in the Cellar: Feminine Silence, Madness, and Resilience in Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace (1996)

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This article looks at Margaret Atwood’s postmodernist Neo-Victorian novel Alias Grace through the lens of Elizabeth A. Flynn, Patricia Sotirin, and Ann Brady’s theories on feminist resilience. In seeing Grace Marks’ resilience as rhetorical, relational, and contextual, this paper provides a deep analysis of feminine vulnerability in the novel and establishes silence as a mechanism for resilience at its center, one which allows Grace to persist and subvert her position as a madwoman through the power of knowledge.
