Carbon Assimilation by Forests as an Ecosystem Service: Quantitative Assessment on the Example of the Trans-Baikal Territory and the Chikoy National Park

Abstract: The article presents the results of assessing the role of the forests of the Trans-Baikal Territory and the National Park “Chikoy” in the absorption of atmospheric carbon. The calculations were performed based on the data of the state forest registry on the species and age composition of forest stands for 2005-2021 using a technique that takes into account growth coefficients. The obtained quantitative estimates of the role of the region՚s forests in carbon sequestration confirm the need to expand the area of protected areas and ensure sustainable forest management in order to preserve this ecosystem function of the forests of Transbaikalia.
