Type: article
Abstract: Parthenium hysterophorus L. extract (PHLE) was prepared from the invasive weed, which composed of flavonoids, penylpropanoids, alkaloids and amino acids with a number of O and N atoms. Weight loss measurements showed that PHLE exhibited a moderate inhibition effect on cold rolled steel (CRS) in 0.50 M H2SO4 with the maximum inhibition efficiency of 74.45%. The synergistic inhibition efficiency can be up to 91.51% with the addition of a minimal quantity of KI (10 mg L-1). The adsorption of PHLE and PHLE/KI obey Langmuir isotherm. The electrochemical inhibition mechanism is geometric blocking effect for PHLE/KI that acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. Nyqusit diagram exhibits a large capacitive loop at high frequencies, PHLE/KI significantly enhances the charge transfer resistance. Surface morphology analysis results show that the synergisitic inhibitor of PHLE/KI reduces the surface roughness of the CRS surface, while increases the hydrophobicity. The results of surface element analysis show that the active compounds from PHLE can adsorb on CRS surface by physisorption and chemisorption through the conjugated structure as well as N and O atoms. Quantum chemical and molecular dynamics analysis proved that the main components in PHLE contain conjugated structures and elements, such as benzene rings, nitrogen and oxygen, which can adsorb on the surface of cold-rolled steel by coordination bonds and feedback bonds to protect the cold-rolled steel effectively. The improvement of the synergistic inhibition effect provided by a trace amount of KI exhibits great research value in cost-cutting in the field of plant-based inhibitor application.
