Abstract: The article, based on materials from the archive of the French Foreign Ministry, a significant part of which had not previously been introduced into scientific circulation, examines the circumstances that led to France being the first Western country to recognize the existence of the People's Republic of Angola (NRA) in February 1976. Archival documents show that the evolution of French policy towards the Angolan crisis, from a neutral position to recognition of the NRA, was due to the actions of the USSR, which carried out large-scale support for the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) under the leadership of Agostinho Neto. It was Moscow's support that became a decisive factor in the success of the MPLA during the fighting and forced Paris to urgently reconsider its position. From the point of view of the French side, the e s tablishment of contacts between the young Angolan state and France and other Western countries should have led to a decrease in the dependence of the NRA on the USSR. The decision of the President of the Fifth Republic, Valery Giscard d'Estaing, to recognize the NRA turned out to be unexpected for France's Western partners and met with a sharp reaction from the countries of the European Economic Community, some African states and especially the United States. Nevertheless, despite Washington's pressure, Paris not only did not abandon the decision, but did not even agree to postpone it, which became an example of a truly independent French policy during the Cold War. The recognition of the NRA did not lead to the rapid development of contacts between Paris and Luanda. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established only in January 1977.
