Organic Electrochemical Transistor (OECT)-based Ion Detection for Monitoring Smooth Muscle Electrical Activity
Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Capturing bladder muscle activities via electromyography (EMG) poses challenges. This study explores the viability of flexible organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) as a potential alternative for real-time monitoring of ion fluxes in bladder smooth muscle function, offering a more viable solution. By optimising OECT channel dimensions and conducting in vitro characterisations, insights into device behaviour and sensitivity to ion concentrations are gained. Here, OECTs are optimised to channel dimensions with a width of $300 \mu \mathrm{~m}$ and length of $50 \mu \mathrm{~m}$ that are sensitive to ionic concentrations as low as $10 \mu \mathrm{M}$. These results demonstrate that OECTs can provide valuable insights into smooth muscle activity and hold promise for applications in physiological research and clinical diagnostics.
