New bricks in the wall regarding the link between obesity and atopic dermatitis

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The study of Traidl et al. addressed an issue that is still not completely elucidated: the relationship between obesity and atopic dermatitis, more precisely investigating the association between obesity and AD severity. This analysis comprised only adult patients from the TREATgermany registry cohort and investigated the associations between obesity and physician-and patient-reported measures of disease severity.Although there was a trend for the obese AD group towards a higher disease severity, only oSCORAD (essentially oozing and excoriation) and the patient-oriented eczema measure (POEM) score were found to be significantly higher in obese compared with non-obese AD patients.1 Moreover, the literature is not conclusive concerning the association between obesity and AD prevalence. While the studies from the United States both in children and adults showed that AD patients 2 had a higher BMI compared with non-AD, in some European populations the association is not found.3 This suggests regional differences involving a stronger environmental factor (e.g.dietary) rather than genetic background component.
