Abstract: Back groundWith a focus on focal neurological deficit, acute ischemic stroke is the leading cause of adult mortality and morbidity worldwide. The objective of this study is to assess and correlate various platelet indices and carotid intima media thickness with the functional outcome and severity of stroke patients, as assessed by the NIHSS rating. Platelet anatomical and physiological structure (as determined by MPV, PDW, and PLATELETCRIT) plays a significant role in assessing stroke severity with a much better efficacious method.Material and MethodsTo accomplish these goals, an observational study was carried out with a total of 47 cases making up the sample size. Information was gathered about the history of the stroke's onset, duration, and course; basic blood investigations, CT brain / MRI, and Carotid Doppler were performed to measure the platelet parameters and Carotid Intima Media Thickness; NIHSS scores were computed; and data was compiled and reviewed.ResultsThis study included a larger proportion of male than female cases, most of which were over 60 years old, with 66.7% of the cases having hypertension and 68.4% having diabetes mellitus. The mean platelet volume was 8.8, the mean platelet distribution width was 12.4, the mean plateletocrit was 2.8, the mean Carotid intima media thickness was 0.1, and the mean NIHSS scores was 10.9; CIMT showed a negative but not statistically significant correlation with MPV, PDW, and PCT in this study; the pearson correlation coefficient was negative for MPW, positive but not significant for PDW, and positive and significant for PCT with NIHSS.ConclusionsThis study had indicated that, PCT had a positive and substantial link with the NIHSS scores. CIMT had no correlation with any platelet indicators.
