Monte Carlo modeling and simulation of electron beam irradiation optimization for screwworm fly eradication through sterile insect technique

Type: article
Abstract: This study defined the basic requirements of an electron beam irradiation system to deliver an optimal dose uniformity ratio (DUR) for screwworm pupal irradiation for sterile insect technique (SIT) application through radiation physics modeling and simulations using the Monte Carlo n-Particle (MCNP) code. This study demonstrated the feasibility of transitioning from gamma rays to electron beam technology with a minimal change required to the existing auxiliary irradiation equipment. A twin bidirectional electron beam source system with an energy of 1.5 MeV at an air gap distance of 5–10 cm are sufficient to deliver doses ranging from 40 to 70 Gy with a DUR <1.5. This work further shows that the existing tray must be modified in four ways to achieve the desired result: by reducing its pupae quantity to 75%; by replacing its acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic with a 1 mm-thick aluminum as material; by adding an aluminum lid; and by placing holes on its base and lid.
