Quantifying Hospital Opportunities to Increase Ischemic Stroke Thrombolysis

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: hrombolysis treatment rates vary across the United States, suggesting opportunities to increase thrombolysis treatment rates. 1 For example, stroke thrombolysis may not be a key priority if the hospital treats few patients with stroke or already treats a high proportion.2 The potential benefits of optimizing stroke thrombolysis vary between hospitals. In this context, we explored the hospital volume of patients with stroke and the proportion who received thrombolysis. We also sought to quantify the number of hospitals at various thrombolysis treatment thresholds and the gap in thrombolysis treatment. The Michigan Medicine institutional review board determined that this study was exempt from approval and consent as this is secondary data.We used data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project 2018 State Inpatient Databases from 17 states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Washington, Wisconsin). The databse includes data on all inpatient discharges in the state. The data for this study are available through the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Central Distributor at [email protected] this cross-sectional study, we selected hospital admissions with a principal diagnosis code of ischemic stroke (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification [ICD-10-CM]: I63) in 2018.
