The Alps-Adriatic Region – an “Area of Transition”: Doing In-Between in Travel Literature of the 19th Century
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Based on travel literature, the article explores the ways in which the Alps-Adriatic Region of the 19th century was portrayed as a hybrid space characterised by doing in-between. It traces these features by analysing descriptions of trade relations and trade routes, mobile practices, multilingualism, and processes of cultural exchange. The paper highlights the multiple affiliations and multiple positioning of historical subjects, which go against the grain of a nationalising historiography.
