Enhancing Lateral Load Resistance in High-rise Buildings Using Outrigger-belt Truss Systems
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Urbanization and limited land availability have made high-rise structures essential components of modern cities, necessitating advanced engineering solutions to address significant lateral forces caused by wind and seismic activities.Outrigger systems, which strategically connect the central core to peripheral columns, have emerged as an effective solution for enhancing the structural performance of tall buildings. This study conducts a parametric analysis of a 40-story high-rise building modeled using ETABS software, incorporating a core-outrigger system with belt trusses under lateral loading. The investigation reveals that the number and placement of outriggers are directly influenced by the building's height.Notably, the optimal location for a single outrigger with a belt truss is identified at 0.4 H from the bottom of the structure, maximizing lateral load resistance and minimizing deflections. These findings provide critical insights into the strategic design and implementation of outrigger systems, advancing high-rise structural engineering and offering practical guidelines for achieving optimal efficiency in tall buildings.
