Tropological Stylistic Perspective of Rendering the Path to Glory Motif in the Ukrainian Translation of Robert Oppenheimer’s Biography

Type: article
Abstract: This paper highlights the ways tropological manifestations of the path to glory motif are rendered in the Ukrainian translation of Kai Bird & Martin Sherwin’s “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer”, a biography describing life peripetias of Robert Oppenheimer as the father of atomic bomb. The motivology of the path in terms of mythologemes and metaphorical imagery has recently attracted attention of researchers both in the genre of literary and documentary biographies. For this reason, the paper addressed the key metaphors as the path to glory motif markers, which were thematically grouped according to the topics of the hero’s life choice, his academic experience and communicative behaviour, particularly through the lens of intellectual contest and game. Each of the above groups of verbal metaphors correlates in the biographical writing under study with the respective conceptual metaphors, the latter highlighting sensory imagery, physical processes and states as manifestations of the authors’ and characters’ mind dynamism. All this requires generalisation and systematisation of the ways such metaphors were rendered in translation, while embracing a set of transformations – from concretisations and modulations to stylistic neutralisation.
