Abstract: T he updated AORN "Guideline for sterilization packaging systems" 1 provides new recommendations for personnel who evaluate, select, and use sterilization packaging systems."Packaging is essential to protecting the integrity of the sterilized items," said lead author, Amber Wood, MSN, RN, CNOR, CIC, FAPIC, senior perioperative practice specialist at AORN. "If the packaging is compromised, we can go through all the correct sterilization processes and find out later that the packages are contaminated.That is why we must ensure that we are packaging in adherence to the manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU)."The guideline is available both in the 2025 edition of the Guidelines for Perioperative Practice and on eGuidelines+.
