Abstract: Solid-state single-photon sources based on quantum dots have found numerous applications in fields ranging from quantum information processing to commercial displays. A major current limitation is the large inhomogeneity in, and lack of tunability of, the photon energy. Here, the authors demonstrate electrically defined quantum dots for excitons in monolayer semiconductors, where the exciton, and consequently the photon emission, energy can be controlled using applied gate voltages. Resonance fluorescence measurements show strong spectral jumps and blinking of exciton emission, verifying their zero-dimensional nature.
