Abstract: Background: Transgender individuals in India have long attained their own identity as the "Third Gender".But they are still stigmatized by society and not given equal opportunities. Many factors subject them to immense stress and inevitably urge them to indulge in tobacco and alcohol which does more harm than good. This study aims at evaluating the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions among transgender individuals residing in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study using a non-probability snowball sampling technique was used to examine 85 transgender individuals residing in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The World Health Organisation (WHO) Oral Health Assessment Proforma (2013) was used to record the findings of each transgender individual. The chi-square test was applied to find the significance of the association between age and type of lesion as well as age and location of the lesion.Result: Aphthous ulcers (34.28%) are the most prevalent oral mucosal lesions among the transgender individuals examined. Most of the lesions were seen in individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 (22.35%).The buccal mucosa (48.57%) is found to be the most common location presenting an oral mucosal lesion. Conclusion: The number of oral mucosal lesions sustained by transgender individuals is high between the ages of 18 and 25.Lack of basic health facilities, poor oral hygiene, tobacco and alcohol abuse play a major role in the manifestation of oral mucosal lesions.
