The Impact of Food Literacy Competence on Attitudes Toward and Purchase Intentions for Local Food
Year: 2024

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study empirically examines the impact of food literacy competencies on attitudes toward and purchase intentions for local food, while investigating the moderating effects of food tourism involvement. Utilizing survey data from 585 participants, the study employs structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis. Key findings reveal that components of food literacy, including food selection skills, understanding of food relationships, and knowledge of food systems, significantly influence attitudes toward local food. However, knowledge about food selection alone did not have a direct impact. Attitudes toward local food were found to be a significant predictor of purchase intentions. Furthermore, food tourism involvement moderated the relationship between food literacy and attitudes toward local food, with stronger effects observed among individuals with higher food tourism involvement. This research contributes to the academic understanding of food literacy by systematically establishing its components and demonstrating their influence on consumer behavior regarding local food. Practically, the study suggests businesses provide accessible information and experiential opportunities to enhance consumer understanding of local food systems, while highlighting the need for collaborative efforts in promoting the sustainable food system.
