Hydroponics Program Using Recycled Materials for Primary School

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study aims to develop a hydroponics program suitable for elementary school classrooms so that hydroponics can be carried out in school settings most conveniently and without a burden on the budget.Based on SWOT analysis, the school organization was analyzed from an internal and external perspective into strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The study was largely conducted in three stages: utilizing recycled plastic products and developing simple hydroponics and aquaponics experience. In the first stage, students understand upcycling, which adds new value by using discarded items as pots for hydroponics, and feel a sense of accomplishment. In stage 2, students promote scientific thinking by converting regular pots into hydroponics and learn about the various advantages of hydroponics. In the third stage, students will experience the ecological sensitivity of aquaponics through in-depth home study and develop strategies for hydroponics of various crops. The hydroponics program was designed to be implemented by elementary school students using recycled and low-cost items that are easy to obtain daily. In addition, it was explained step by step so that teachers could easily understand and guide students without difficulty. If this program is practically applied in school settings, it will be educationally helpful to students with difficulty with hydroponics.
