A Study on the Settings of the Supply Pressure Range for Fire Department Connections to Apartments

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: When selecting the capacity of the pressurized water supply system for fire department connection facilities, such as apartments, many fire design companies set the design flow rate at 1,200 L/min while considering the friction loss in pipes and accessories to the highest apartment block of the actual head and the farthest apartment block in the complex. In this study, 10 field surveys, including those of recently built apartments, and three high-rise water supply experiments were conducted. The study presents a strategy for using fire department connection facilities as follows. First, during the normal operation of the pressurized water supply device, the supply pressure to the fire engine vehicle is gradually increased from 0.3 MPa or higher to transmit water. This protects firefighters from high-pressure increases. Second, when the pressurized water supply device is not operated, it is transmitted at a pressure equivalent to 50 m of head (net positive suction head + fire engine vehicle supply pressure) required for the height of the fire floor. Here, the required head of 50 m can be calculated as the sum of the suction head up to the pressurized water supply device and the supply pressure of the fire engine vehicle.
