Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The effectiveness of cybercrime policies and institutional responses in Karnataka, India is investigated in this study with a focus on the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies, judiciary, and other relevant bodies in dealing with the ever-increasing threat of cybercrime. The number of cybercrimes – data breaches, fraud, and hacking – that have recently increased has presented the state with major problems for its legal and institutional infrastructure. The focus of this research is the critical study of key legislation, notably the Information Technology Act of 2000, and the evaluation of the operational effectiveness of specialized agencies such as the Cyber Crime Cell within Karnataka Police. An analysis of new research findings shows that problems persist in that despite the existence of new legal and institutional structures, there are gaps, such as the lack of sufficient resources, awareness of cybercrime, and the delay related to the adjudication of cyber offenses. The paper proposes that the current approach to cybercrime in Karnataka should be more proactive and integrated and that this can be achieved by bringing governmental agencies, the private sector, and educational institutions together. Additionally, the study finds that legal frameworks need to be regularly updated to fight new cyber threats like ransomware and phishing. The recommendations for future research incorporate advancing the application of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain to strengthen cybercrime prevention and response mechanisms in Karnataka.
