Corrosion-resistant amorphous alloy enabled by multi-minerals smelting reduction

Type: article
Abstract: Corrosion-resistant Fe-based amorphous alloys play a pivotal role in a variety of anti-corrosion coatings and precision devices. However, the high content of Cr, Mo elements in these corrosion-resistant amorphous alloys have aroused a host of puzzles such as the high cost of raw materials and the difficulty of alloy melting. This study offers a novel strategy for facile production of FeCrPCSi corrosion-resistant amorphous alloys via smelting reduction of high-phosphorus iron ore in collaboration with chromite and apatite. The equilibrium states of the multi-minerals smelting reduction were first calculated to determine the experimental conditions and material ratios. The specific experiments were then performed to study the structure evolution and element migration during the smelting reduction. FeCr 0–12.29 P 5.90–7.73 C 1.49–4.05 Si 1.67–2.50 (wt%) reduced alloys can be readily obtained and the content of Cr, C elements can be well tailored by adding chromite and controlling the C/O ratio. The resultant Cr-containing FeCrPCSi amorphous ribbons exhibit a unique combination of wide passivation interval and large polarization resistance as well as large corrosion potential ( E corr ) and small corrosion current density ( I corr ), giving rise to a strong resistance to corrosion. These findings are crucial, heralding the short-process production of corrosion-resistant amorphous alloys enabled by multi-minerals smelting reduction.
