Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Objective: This study investigates the implementation process of the Extension Project "Nucleus for Assistance to People with Electronic Monitoring" (NUPEM/UEPG) and its relationship with the social reintegration of monitored individuals. Developed in partnership between the Department of Penal Management of the State of Paraná (DEPPEN) and the State University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG), the project integrates the fields of Law, Psychology, and Social Work. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on approaches from Critical Criminology and the Economic Theory of Crime, considering structural and social factors that impact the reintegration process. Method: The analysis is based on data collected from 660 monitored individuals in the region of Ponta Grossa between July and September 2023. Socioeconomic and social vulnerability indicators, such as income, education, and labor market participation, were evaluated. Results and Discussion: Despite being in its initial phase, the project shows positive trends, including a reduction in incidents during the analyzed period. However, challenges persist related to social vulnerability and the stigma associated with the use of electronic monitoring devices. Research Implications: This study contributes to the advancement of public policies for decarceration, proposing strategies to strengthen interdisciplinary practices and promote greater social inclusion for monitored individuals. Originality/Value: The research highlights NUPEM/UEPG's innovative role in integrating academia and the penal system, providing evidence to improve social reintegration policies aligned with the 2030 Agenda.
