Giant Coronary Artery Aneurysms in an Infant Diagnosed With Kawasaki Disease

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis that is predominantly a clinical diagnosis as defined by the American Heart Association. Kawasaki disease has become the most common cause of acquired heart disease in children due to a predilection for targeting the coronary arteries, with approximately 25% of untreated cases developing coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs). Although it is a self-limited diagnosis, early diagnosis and treatment is the key to reduce inflammation and potential for damage to the arterial wall with risk for developing coronary artery ectasia and CAAs.
