Dorpat Letters of Jan Baudouin de Courtenay to Jan Karłowicz from 1887–1891, Part I

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The correspondence presented here includes four letters and two postcards from 1887–1888, sent by Jan Baudouin de Courtenay to Jan Karłowicz. This correspondence concerns the Dorpat period of the life of Baudouin de Courtenay and his family. The main topics are: (1) the stay of the Karłowicz family’s eldest son, Edmund, as a boarder at the home of the Baudouin family; (2) scholarly and other relations at Dorpat University and in Dorpat. The edition retains the original notation, including repetitions, crossings out and additions, which – as one can assume – will provide insight into the idiolect of Jean Baudouin de Courtenay. The second part of the correspondence, including seven letters and fourteen postcards, will be published in Acta Baltica-Slavica in 2025.
